Xavier Teaching School Hub

Mentor Area

Mentors’ Entitlement and Responsibilities

  • A mentor plays the most important role in supporting a new teacher’s development day in, day out.
  • In the first week of term, the nominated mentor should meet with their ECT.  This is a chance to discuss ways of working and the ECT’s post-ITT areas for development.  Targets can then be set with a focus on the first online module related to behaviour and high expectations.
  • Mentors are required to attend online mentor seminars each half term, which complement the online modules being undertaken by their ECTs.  Because they then know exactly what their ECTs are studying, mentors can tailor and align their support accordingly.
  • Mentors are required to meet with their ECT weekly (first year) or fortnightly (second year), and to observe and discuss their practice.  The weekly bulletin sent out by the Xavier central team will support mentors in their role.
  • All handbooks and proformas to support this process can be found on our website for ease; great care has been taken to ensure a smooth mentoring transition from ITT to ECF.
